Five Reads To Check Out

Here are some links to check out that may be different from your usual social work stack. 📚

Melissa Ambrosini

Melissa Ambrosini is a health and wellness coach empowering people to live the best version of themselves. She has written a book called Mastering Your Mean Girl and what is helpful about that is that it is an easy book to recommend to clients. Particularly women, where CBT could be helpful but you know if beginning psychoeducation with them would make their eyes glaze over with submissive nods waiting for you to stop talking! She also has some excellent podcasts on mental health and various ways for improving wellbeing from gut health to tapping. There’s something for everyone. Her second book Open Wide is fantastic for clients who are really ready to dive in.

Dr Joe Dispenza

Dr Joe Dispenza is solid in his evidence and has some great resources (although you’ll have to pay) on survival states and the connection to body and hormone functioning and how that impacts mood and personality. His Rewired series is worth watching on Gaia TV.

Janina Fisher

If you’ve been working in trauma and haven’t heard of Janina Fisher then you need to get out from your rock! She has a beautiful warm approach and an easy style to follow. Her website has some great resources especially on suicidality and self harm.

Bruce Perry

So refreshing to read a warm and narrative style about childhood trauma. Probably not something you will say regularly! But heavy practice books can be hard to read (getting past chapter 3 always seems like a herculean task for me 🤭). Perry is a psychiatrist and his book The Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog is full of evidence based practice with a warm and narrative style about his clinical work. He provides lots of examples that you can relate to.

Gabby Bernstein

Now Gabby is a little different but great for clients who are ok with woo-woo and are looking for a strong thought leader with lots of directions. She has gone through her own trauma processing so has lots of strategies to implement but doesn’t necessarily talk much about her trauma experiences. She has many free resources for clients to access, especially on anxiety and different strategies to implement.
