Dr Maya Angelou famously said:
Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.
I remind myself of this sometimes when I’m doing something that makes me feel small and vulnerable.
I also remind myself of this when I’m with a client and I may not feel like I’m across it all.
I take one step at a time until it starts to feel like it’s coming together.
I hold compassion for the steps rather than striving for perfection.
By doing so, I stay actively engaged. Because being actively engaged creates momentum.
Through curiosity I can learn, know better, know more, know differently.
When I read about thought leaders’ lives, they all seem to have an insatiable appetite for learning through curious inquisition.
These are the types of people that do great things in the world. They don’t wallow and say it can’t be done. They actively decline their pity party.
They take one step at a time. One clunky, messy, uneasy step at a time to create progress, not perfection; progress.
I believe that blessed are those that are brave enough to take these curious steps forward despite their own messiness in order to create a better world.
That doesn’t make them an imposter, it makes them a goddam hero.
Your doubt should be embraced because it means you care and when you know differently, you’ll do it differently. Society does not celebrate beginners very well; we celebrate the end result.
I believe we’re all on this round ball together winging it so don't be too hard on yourself. Have compassion for yourself, and the process of it all, celebrating each messy step you take.
People may even like the steps you take, I know I do.
